Set up a custom domain

Written by Benjamin Dell

A custom domain lets visitors access your event from a branded address such as summit.yourdomain.com instead of your default HeySummit subdomain.

HeySummit custom domains must use a subdomain. Examples include summit.yourdomain.com or event.yourdomain.com. The www host can also work as a subdomain if that is the address you want to use. Do not enter a root domain such as yourdomain.com, and do not include http://, https://, or a path.

Before you start

  • You need access to your domain's DNS settings. This is usually managed by the company where you bought the domain, such as GoDaddy, Cloudflare, Netlify, or another DNS host.

  • The subdomain you want to use must not already have another conflicting DNS record.

  • Your HeySummit dashboard remains available on your HeySummit subdomain even after the public event uses a custom domain.

Step 1: Add the CNAME record

In your DNS provider, create a CNAME record for the subdomain you want to use.

  • Name/Host: the subdomain part only, such as summit if you want to use summit.yourdomain.com.

  • Target/Value: fallback.heysummit.com.

Use fallback.heysummit.com, not your existing HeySummit event subdomain.

Step 2: Register the domain in HeySummit

  1. Open your event dashboard.

  2. Go to Event Setup > General.

  3. In the Event Domain section, choose Custom Domain.

  4. Enter the full custom domain, such as summit.yourdomain.com.

  5. Click Register.

Step 3: Add the TXT verification records

After you register the domain, HeySummit will show TXT records that verify domain ownership and allow the SSL certificate to be issued.

Add the TXT record names and values exactly as shown in HeySummit. If HeySummit says Cloudflare is still preparing the TXT records, wait a few minutes and click Refresh Status.

DNS changes can take a few minutes and sometimes a few hours to be detected. You can close the panel after adding the CNAME and TXT records correctly; HeySummit will email the event owner when the custom domain is active.

Checking your setup

  • If HeySummit says it cannot find a CNAME record, confirm that the subdomain points to fallback.heysummit.com, then click Refresh Status.

  • If TXT verification is pending, check the TXT records in your DNS provider. For example, you can use nslookup.io's TXT lookup and search for the TXT record name shown in HeySummit.

  • Your custom domain becomes active only after HeySummit sees the required DNS records and the SSL status is active.
