Connecting your PayPal account to your Event

Written by Benjamin Dell

You can connect PayPal as a custom payment gateway for your event if you have a PayPal Business account. Personal PayPal accounts cannot be used for this integration.

Before you connect PayPal, check that your event's ticket currency is supported by PayPal. HeySummit will also validate this when you save the connection. PayPal's current supported-currency guidance is available in its supported currencies documentation.

To connect PayPal:

  1. Go to Event Setup > Payment Methods in your event dashboard.

  2. Find PayPal in the Payment Gateway Providers list.

  3. Open the Manage menu and choose Connect.

  4. In a separate tab, open PayPal Developer > My Apps & Credentials and sign in to your PayPal Business account.

  5. Select Live, then create or open a REST API app for your event.

  6. Copy the app's Client ID and Secret into HeySummit.

  7. Select Save & Connect.

HeySummit verifies the Client ID and Secret before saving them. If the credentials are incorrect, or if your event's ticket currency is not available for PayPal, the connection will not be saved and you will see an error explaining what needs to change.

After PayPal is connected and active, attendees can choose PayPal at checkout. Depending on PayPal's checkout options for the attendee and merchant account, attendees may be able to pay with a PayPal account or a card through PayPal. Payment methods can vary by PayPal account, country, currency, and PayPal's own availability rules.

If you connect multiple payment gateways, attendees will be offered the active gateways available for the purchase. PayPal can be reconnected, deactivated, activated, or disconnected from the same Manage menu.

If PayPal becomes unavailable after connecting

PayPal may stop accepting payments if the connected Business account is restricted, the REST app credentials change, or PayPal revokes access. When that happens, attendees may see that PayPal is unavailable or that the payment gateway has become disconnected.

Check your PayPal account status in PayPal, including any Resolution Center or account limitation messages, then confirm the Live REST app Client ID and Secret are still the credentials you want to use for this event.

After resolving the PayPal account issue, return to Event Setup > Payment Methods, open the PayPal Manage menu, and reconnect or disconnect and connect PayPal again. HeySummit will validate the credentials before saving the connection.

PayPal does not support HeySummit recurring payment tickets. If you need recurring payments or installment-style tickets, use Stripe instead.
